Award-winning saxophonist and composer Josephine Davies brings her dynamic ensemble Satori to RWCMD to celebrate the launch of ‘Weatherwards’, their fourth album on Whirlwind Recordings. The music is inspired by Josephine’s Nordic roots in the Shetland Islands and beautifully weaves together the band’s contemporary jazz background with a hauntingly evocative folk influence.
In addition to Satori’s tours around the UK and Europe, Josephine also runs her own jazz orchestra, The Ensō Ensemble, which will soon release their debut album ‘The Celtic Wheel of the Year Suite’ on Ubuntu Records. She is also a member of the Harper Trio, with recent performances at Patras Jazz Festival and the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall, and Espial, a free jazz group with a fully improvised album out last year on Discus Records.

The Neil Cowley Trio reunite to perform for the first time in seven years, presenting music from their brand-new album, ‘Entity’, alongside some fan-favourite Cowley classics.
In 2006 the Neil Cowley Trio burst onto the scene with an exciting sound that fizzed with energy; their muscular anthems, galloping grooves and tender moments placed them at the forefront of a new movement in jazz, paving the way for six highly acclaimed albums over ten years. Cowley returns with his close musical allies, bassist Rex Horan and drummer Evan Jenkins in a powerful performance of deeply impassioned music and hooks aplenty with Cowley’s infectious wit and playfulness never far behind.

One of Britain’s finest and most versatile vocal talents and lyricists, Norma Winstone became a notable figure on the British jazz scene during the sixties when she shared the bill at Ronnie Scott’s with Roland Kirk. Since, she has regularly collaborated with the likes of Steve Swallow, Kenny Wheeler, and Dave Holland amongst others, and became known for evolving her own wordless approach to improvisation.
Together with pianist Kit Downes, Norma will bring her poetic sensibilities to new pieces by Downes as well as compositions by Carla Bley, Ralph Towner, and John Taylor, alongside fresh perspectives on two traditional tunes, ‘Black Is The Colour’ and ‘Rowing Home’.
‘I’m looking for words that are already in the music. Always. That’s how I work. And if the words do come, it’s as if they were always there.’ - Norma Winstone
