(Dis)possessed
POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Warsaw
24 July – 5 August & 28 September – 4 November

I’m excited to share more details of the sound installation I’ve been working on at POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw.

(Dis)possessed responds to objects in POLIN’s collection that were made out of (mis)appropriated Torah parchment during and after WW2. All the sounds heard in the piece come from these objects, which will be on display.

According to Jewish religious law, desecrated Torahs should be buried. However, these artefacts also testify to the Holocaust and its aftermath and therefore they were accepted into the museum’s collection for educational purposes.

By special permission of the Chief Rabbi of Poland, this installation marks the first time they have been publicly displayed, and attempts to navigate and express their historical and religious complexities through the medium of sound.

(Dis)possessed opens this Wednesday 24 July and runs until 6 August on its own, then again as part of a group show from 28 September to 4 November.

The piece was commissioned as part of “Jesteśmy tutaj” (“We Are Here”), a series of nine exhibitions celebrating the museum’s 10th birthday.
