After a short stint of gigs in 2023, the quartet reunites for a swift, heavy hitting UK tour of hard-bop and feel good swing.
BMJ are delighted to welcome two rising stars back to Abergavenny and the club where these two fine musicians first met.

As a finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2020, winner of the Rising Star category in the 2019 British Jazz Awards and nominee in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2021 & 2022, Alex Clarke is known to be one of the most in-demand and versatile saxophonists to have emerged on the British jazz scene. Praised for her intelligent ear for harmony and a deep knowledge of repertoire across a variety of styles, Alex’s sound is steeped in the tradition of swing and bebop, “leaving the listener captivated by every phrase and nuance” (Jazz Views).

Having “already garnered comparisons with the greats” (Jazzwise) after the release of his debut album ‘Home’, Eddie Gripper has been rapidly establishing himself as another young contender on the national jazz circuit. He has worked as a performer, promoter and producer alongside top musicians in his field, including Huw Warren, Iain Ballamy, Laura Jurd, Alex Merritt and Yuri Golubev. As a composer, he has collaborated with Welsh folk artist Angharad Jenkins in a handful of projects, exploring the various aspects of folk, jazz and contemporary classical traditions.

The quartet itself also features Nick Kacal (Double Bass) and Partrick Barrett-Donlon (Drum Kit).

Ronnie Jones drums
John Horler makes a welcome return to Jazz at Progress with his Portrait of Bill Evans. Accompanied by his long-time associate Alec Dankworth on bass and Ronnie Jones on drums, John will bring his ‘moonlight’ touch and imaginative flair for swinging improvisation to pay tribute to Bill Evans and his groundbreaking trio
John is a highly respected pianist and composer who has earned a formidable reputation on the British jazz scene over many years. Growing up in a musical family his gifts emerged at an early age and by the age of sixteen he was studying clarinet and piano at the Royal Academy of Music – an institution where, at that time in the mid-1960s, jazz was neither studied nor valued. John’s abilities were eventually fully acknowledged in later years when he was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) for his services to music
Perhaps best known for his 26-year stint as accompanist to Dame Cleo Laine, John’s impeccable credentials include playing in the big bands of Sir John Dankworth and Maynard Ferguson and supporting scores of visiting guest stars from America, most memorably a week-long gig with Chet Baker at The Canteen. He has worked with legends of the British scene such as Ronnie Ross, Peter King, Kenny Wheeler, Tommy Whittle, Tony Coe, Simon Spillett and Alan Barnes, and broadcast and recorded extensively,  including a number of highly acclaimed albums by his own trio
In his biographical notes, John writes:
For me music, and especially jazz, is about togetherness, about individual input being merged with others to make a whole piece of music.
I was not enthusiastic about the piano as a jazz instrument until I heard Bill Evans. He absorbed the music of the European composers Debussy, Ravel and even Brahms, which he welded into his own very special jazz language. I embraced that almost immediately and even today he is s till the most influential figure in my playing; not in a copying sense I hope, but in an inspirational way.
This is a priceless opportunity to see one of Britain’s most acclaimed jazz pianists playing the music he loves – not to be missed. As the saying goes, ‘Everybody Digs Bill Evans’.
‘John Horler is a quiet, dedicated, gently humorous man, the kind of musician whose work steals up on you. His piano playing, almost placid on the surface, is full of unexpected turns and hidden surprises.’ – Dave Gelly The Observer

John Law presents Re-Creations: creative arrangements of some of the world’s most familiar music. The idea is simple: they take the best-known tunes from all genres – jazz, pop, indie, rock, folk, classical sometimes – and re-create, finding new arrangements and new angles; sometimes just spontaneously re-inventing them.
But no matter how free and inventive they get, no matter how complex and intricate the arrangements become, audiences everywhere always feel part of the creative process, because they know the tune and recognise it when it comes back.
This is music played by highly skilled musicians.  Audiences don’t feel excluded. They are integral to the evening and the whole experience.
Featuring UK Parliamentary Jazz Award Winner saxophonist Sam Crockatt, Danish bass player and composer Henrik Jensen and a new young firebrand on the UK jazz drumming scene: Alex Goodyear
John Law“One of the UK’s most imaginative and versatile jazz pianists”– International Piano Magazine
“This was the best, and most dynamic, of the Re-Creations shows that I’ve seen. Law is a brilliant technician and his own playing was superb, as was that of his very able colleagues.” – The Jazz Mann

FRIDAY 4 APRIL
CHRIS WOOD
Widcombe Social Club
Doors 7.00pm - Chris Wood on stage 8.00pm
All Of The Above welcomes England’s passionate, compassionate, fierce, acute, witty, uncompromising and influential singer of traditional songs and composer of songs in the tradition - there’s no-one quite like Chris Wood.
Wood’s music reveals his love for the un-official history of the English speaking people. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables. An independent streak shines through everything he does. Direct and unafraid to speak his mind, his song writing has been praised for its surgical clarity. Characteristically he cites his major influence as Anon.
Chris Wood’s most recent album So Much to Defend ranges in subject matter from football to empty nest syndrome, learning to swim, Cook-in Sauce and, not least, the Gecko as a metaphor for contemporary society.
Reviewing the album fROOTS MAGAZINE perceptively said:
Chris Wood might be the Ken Loach of songwriting. Very political, but at the same time full of compassion, and he grows sharper and more acute with each passing album. Hes good, quite probably the very best we have today, and we need him more than ever.
Similarly, ACOUSTIC MAGAZINE wrote:
“Steeped in tradition, yet always striving for a new day, this is a glorious album proving that Chris Wood is a bit of a national treasure.”

THE STAN TRACEY TRIBUTE QUARTET (feat. CLARK TRACEY)

  Simon Allen - Reeds
Gareth Williams - Piano
Andrew Cleyndert - Bass
Clark Tracey - Drums

Simon Allen is one of our finest contemporary saxophonists with a history of fronting the Stan Tracey Quartet, as well being a member of Tracey’s Octet, Sextet and Big Band.

Gareth Williams is an outstanding pianist, a powerhouse musician more than capable of re-energising Stan Tracey’s compositions.

Andrew Cleyndert on bass was with Stan for 25 years, performing in all his ensembles and recording him often on his own record label.

Clark Tracey spent 35 years as Stan’s drummer, recording, touring and performing with his father.

The Stan Tracey Tribute Quartet plays a chronological repertoire of Stan’s best loved material and a few cheeky unknown ones.

“For me Tracey is a world-class musician whose mature and distinctive artistry – his own “snap-crackle” – is right up there with the likes of Philly Joe Jones and Roy Haynes.  Clark Tracey is also a great bandleader, able to engage both easily and warmly with audiences while offering them the most intelligently programmed music, selected from many a realm of jazz.”

You will hear contemporary Jazz with a cohesive blend of swing, Latin and funk rhythms.

Basil’s interest in music and the piano started at junior school. His quest to become a jazz musician started in earnest when he undertook classical piano lessons from a local teacher for a few years. He then went on to have private lessons with jazz pianist/composer Tim Richards from 1986 – 89. He rounded of his training at Goldsmiths College London in 1991.

His professional career started in the summer of 1993 as a freelance musician and he steadily rose up the ranks to play with some of the leading UK players such as Jim Mullen, Tony Kofi, Dave O’Higgins and Renato D’Aiello. In November 2003 Basil produced and released his debut CD My Guardian Angel featuring his original compositions, which led to a distribution deal with New Note Records. The CD received critical acclaim and air play. His second album ‘Sound Reasoning’ was released in October 2009, distributed by Proper Note Ltd. The CD contained 10 more fresh and exciting originals from Basil’s pen which confirmed his stature as an established composer. Sound Reasoning received rave reviews including a 4-star rating from Jack Massarik (Evening Standard). He appeared on Claire Martin’s Jazz Line Up show (BBC Radio 3) to talk about his album and musical influences. He also performed a live solo piano piece for the programme. Three of the main jazz DJs from Jazz FM, Helen Mayhew, Mike Chadwick and Sarah Ward have all recently played his music.

Basil has been leading his bands (trio, quartet and quintet) since 1995 and has performed in such venues as Ronnie Scott’s, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth and National Theatre Foyers, the Swanage and Ealing Jazz Festivals, The Vortex Jazz Club, The Crypt, The Hideaway, Boxford Fleece, Watermills Jazz, The Bonington Theatre and The Verdict Jazz Club.

Make Much Wenlock Weird presents Field Lines Cartographer and Roma Agnihotri

For the final event of the first season of Make Much Wenlock Weird we proudly present Field Lines Cartographer.
There’s no rush in Field Lines Cartographer’s world, no hurried resolutions or hasty developments, in fact Mark Burford has been meticulously crafting an impeccable body of work that revels in gradual imperceptible shifts and slow-burning realisations for some years now.  Burford’s music is intensely emotive and unfathomably deep. While the textural detail inherent in all of FLC’s work carries through to his jawdropping live show, the performance is mostly stripped back to a couple of hardware synthesisers, effortlessly mixing analogue and digital in a masterclass of restraint and balance, earning him a much-lauded repeat appearance at Levitation festival, a spot at DiN’s Tone Science live show at the Capstone Theatre in Liverpool and a performance at the G Livelab in Helsinki. Field Lines Cartographer’s work, both recorded and live is enduringly immersive and undeniably skilled, perfectly toeing the line between trickling ambient vignettes and immovable walls of sound, often both at the same time.

Support is provided by Roma Agnihotri, an audio-visual artist whose passion lies in exploring the synergy between sound and visuals. After completing their degree in creative music technology, Roma has created an abstract experimental film series that explores the relationship between sound and non-narrative-based films. Driven by a passion for repurposing and reusing materials, Roma combines reworked samples, circuit bent instruments and found sounds, infusing their films with a distinctive and unconventional sonic landscape. Their work aims to challenge the conventional notions of sound, visuals, and the boundless possibilities they hold.

Rob Luft Quartet
March 27, 2025 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm

One of the most exciting and accomplished jazz guitarists in Europe today.

Rob Luft is undeniably one of the most exciting jazz guitarists in Europe of his generation. Hailing from London, this award-winning virtuoso has garnered comparisons to legends such as John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia, and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Rob is a true rising star, possessing a rare combination of talent as a guitarist, band-leader, composer, and captivating communicator. He won the Kenny Wheeler Award after graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 2016, followed by the release of his debut album “Riser” in 2017. Luft’s joy in music-making, humility, and ability to connect with other musicians quickly made him one of the most sought-after instrumentalists to emerge from the UK in recent years.

His highly anticipated third album “Dahab Days” was released on Edition Records in October 2023 and reveals Rob’s willingness to push boundaries and expand his sonic palette. Drawing inspiration from his time in Egypt’s Dahab region during the pandemic, he infuses the album with a unique ambiance that permeates his compositions.

For this performance Rob is joined by Joe Wright (sax), Will Sach (bass) and Corrie Dick (drums)

Jas Kayser & Chums
January 23, 2025 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm

A fiery 5-piece combining jazz, Afro-beat and Latin rhythms from an incredible young drummer

Jas Kayser played on my first visit to 91 Living Room in London – the home of Jazz refreshed – back in November 2022. I spoke to her after the gig and emailed her manager right away to arrange a booking, but it took two years of persistence to line up this gig, so I am really stoked it is finally happening!

A conscientious student at the Julien Joseph Academy in the UK, Jas went on to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston. While at Berklee, Jas caught the attention of Lenny Kravitz, who invited her to Paris to film his 2018 video ‘Low’. She also spent time in Panama with her Berklee mentor and Panamanian pianist Danilo Perez. In 2021, Jas won the Parliamentary Jazz Newcomer of the Year and Jazz FM Breakthrough Act of the Year awards and she released her debut album in 2022 on the Jazz re:freshed label for their ‘5ive’ series. She has featured with leading artists including Jorja Smith, Alfa Mist, Nubia Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings and most recently joining Lenny Kravitz on his 2024 tour, which will finish it’s South American leg in December, resuming in Europe from February.

Her ‘Chums’ lineup features Daisy George (bassist who appeared at The Marr’s Bar with Tom Ford in September 2022), Richie Sweet (percussion), Christos Stylianides (trumpet) and Jamie Leeming (guitar).

Event 2.0 of Season 3.0

Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and sound designer John Biddulph is thrilled to announce his latest musical project, an exploration of sound that was inspired by Charles Darwin’s iconic text, The Voyage of the Beagle. This performance in Shrewsbury, as part of the Darwin Festival and performed in Darwin’s church, The Unitarian, will offer an auditory journey alongside Darwin’s transformative voyage, blending atmospheric compositions with world music influences to bring the naturalist’s discoveries to life.
Darwin’s The Voyage of the Beagle chronicles his 1831–1836 journey aboard HMS Beagle, a pivotal expedition that shaped his theories on evolution and the diversity of life. John’s music captures the essence of this journey, drawing inspiration from the landscapes, cultures, and ecosystems Darwin encountered.

“I wanted to create a soundtrack that would allow listeners to experience Darwin’s awe and curiosity as he traversed the globe,” said John. “Each track is a musical interpretation of a chapter or extract of text in his journey—whether it’s the wildlife of South America, the vibrant Galápagos Islands, or the vast expanse of the open sea.”
The album’s tracks with titles taken from the text blend genres such as ambient, folk, classical, and South American influenced music, featuring:

“Phosphorescence of the Sea”: An ambient track with echoes of the Atlantic and bioluminescence.

“Streams of Stones”: A haunting fusion of flute-like instruments and modern soundscapes.

“Galápagos Variations”: A multi-layered piece evoking the islands’ unique fauna.

“Homecoming”: A reflective conclusion tying together the threads of the voyage and using the organ Darwin will have heard in the Unitarian Church.

This release and performance coincide with a resurgence of interest in Darwin’s work, offering a fresh way for audiences to engage with his legacy.

Jonathan Enser, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and brass contributor for UK afro-jazz group Nubiyan Twist, describes his new project, MATTERS UNKNOWN, as “celestial blues wrapped in contemporary global grooves.”

Raised in rural England, Enser’s love for music began early, with a passion for the trumpet guiding him to a lifelong exploration of brass. By his teens, he was performing live, and he later studied jazz with Neil Yates, graduating with honors in Jazz Performance in 2013. His journey as a session musician, mentor, and performer has taken him from New Orleans to Cuba and led to collaborations with legends like Mulatu Astatke, Pat Thomas, and Tony Allen.

With MATTERS UNKNOWN, Enser weaves soulful, spiritual influences with grooves that range from blues roots to West Coast trap, infused with African diasporic sounds. This spacious, grounded music balances urgency with calm.

To bring this vision to life, Enser has assembled some of the UK’s most innovative musicians from Nerija, Nala Sinephro, Emma-Jean Thackray’s band, Nubiyan Twist, Noya Rao, and Golden Mean. Following acclaimed singles A Beginningand BlindSpot in 2021, MATTERS UNKNOWN released Hewester, a tribute to bassist Alec Hewes, on the New Soil label, celebrating friendship, emotional connection, and rootedness.

This journey culminates with the debut album, We Aren’t Just, releasing in November 2024. The album invites listeners into a world both familiar and unexplored, with each musician’s voice adding dimension to a sound that opens space for reflection and discovery.

Kings Place is proud to present the gifted bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado for the launch of ‘Effra’, Misha’s fourth album as a bandleader, to be released on Ubuntu Music on 31 Jan 2025.

Effra is a collection of all the music Misha has written in the last four years for his band of over a decade now. The word is often associated with the area of Brixton in South London which has been his home for almost as long as the band has existed. It began as the name of a now-underground river that runs through the area and has more recently been used as the name of a main road and two rival pubs, as well as a smaller road which one of his tracks is named after. The album is an expression of Misha’s love for both his home and for playing jazz after a difficult period in previous years, and these pieces reflect all the personal journeys in that time.

‘The album contains eight original pieces written for my regular jazz sextet. The record goes on a musical journey combining many different influences from traditional jazz to swing to Brazilian samba to classical music to minimalism to modern and obscure. It is unified by the sound of the group playing together with an incredible horn section which often sounds about three times bigger, as well as inventive improvising from all members of the band. This is dedicated to Brixton, the diverse melting pot of all the sights and sounds of the exciting and vibrant city of London, where I have lived all my life.’

Misha’s sextet consists of an exceptional array of musicians: award-winning trumpet/flugelhorn ace James Davison, alto/tenor sax man Matthew Herd, tenor saxophone & bass clarinet player Sam Rapley, pianist Liam Dunachie and drummer Scott Chapman.

Marc Ribot Quartet at Hudson Hall, New York City, USA.

Date: Saturday, February 22, 2025

More details

We have received the following press release regarding this event;

Saturday, February 22 @ 7:00 p.m. MARC RIBOT QUARTET
Marc Ribot - guitar
Chad Taylor - drums
Sebastian Steinberg - bass
Ava Mendoza - guitar

“One of the most amazing evenings of music I’ve experienced…a sheets-of-sound extravaganza. Ribot brings a fire hose of invention, Taylor, a whirlwind of force…”
— DownBeat on Grimes/Ribot/Taylor Trio

Marc Ribot is a musician’s musician. In his over 40-year career, the gifted guitarist has created iconic music with the likes of Tom Waits, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Elvis Costello, John Mellencamp, Marianne Faithful, and many more. For his Hudson Hall debut, Ribot reunites with drummer Chad Taylor to continue the Albert Ayler-tinged trajectory they begun in the early aughts with their band Spiritual Unity and then the Grimes Taylor Ribot Trio, this time with the added talents of former Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg and the fearless guitarist/improvisator Ava Mendoza (Soul Coughing, Unnatural Ways, The Violent Femmes, tUnE-yArDs).

“When I first heard Sebastian Steinberg’s bass playing (w/Joe Morris in the 1980’s), I thought: “THAT’s who I’m looking for: a gifted improviser, deep groove player, and totally original. We worked together in my band Shrek and other formats from the early 1990’s till Sebastian moved to LA, after forming Soul Coughing, and I’m thrilled to resume our collaboration. Ava Mendoza is the perfect person to round out this quartet — great soloist, sensitive ensemble player: a fearless guitarist/ improvisor who knows how to rock the house. We’re ready to take it to the next level.” – MARC RIBOT

At 96-years young, Maye is one of the living legends of the golden age of show business. “Marilyn Maye has everything. She has a theatrical flair that captivates and enthralls, and jazz-spiced chops that can reach notes most singers a third her age can’t even hit in their dreams. She’s the real deal, the surviving artist of the American popular singer.” (New York Observer) Discovered by Steve Allen and beloved by Johnny Carson who featured her on The Tonight Show no less than 76 times, the magnetic cabaret singer returns to Hudson Hall for one night only.

“Let us advance our mortal bodies up Where hearts and minds will go Let’s walk, let’s roll.”

Madeleine Peyroux’s captivating ninth album, 2024’s Let’s Walk, is the acclaimed singer-songwriter’s most assured, courageous work to date. These unabashedly personal songs are powered by the distinctive, honeyed croon that delivered her from Paris streets to concert halls. Moreover, these songs are all co-written by the versatile Peyroux. They deftly interweave jazz, folk, and chamber pop, with themes ranging from confessional to political, from whimsy to yearning. In every note, Peyroux digs deep, rendering this exquisite work with the disarming grace and gravitas of an artist in peak form.

For the ardently civic-minded Peyroux, Let’s Walk continues the scintillating conversation with her audience – and with the world at large. “This music is part of a dialogue,” she says. “That’s what art is. It’s engagement, community. I believe more than anything in getting together with people and listening to music and conversing. Music is the only way I’ve ever built community.”

Let’s Walk was a long time coming, but well worth the wait. Following Peyroux’s 2018 album, Anthem, the enforced isolation of the global pandemic made any real-time community gathering impossible. From a creative standpoint, however, Covid offered Peyroux a silver lining. Thus, she seized the opportunity to hunker down with long-time collaborator, multi-instrumentalist Jon Herington. The pair reflected on the seismic era at hand and wrote and re-wrote in what Peyroux calls “a shadow of reckoning.”

Soon, the spare, slow-burning Let’s Walk material will be set free in venues around the world. They effortlessly dovetail with Peyroux’s beloved versions of Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits classics. As she learned in her busking years, a great song can wield powerful magic. With Let’s Walk, Peyroux takes full ownership of that magic.

“It’s rare to find someone capable of injecting such life into every single lyric.” - London Jazz News

Opening for Madeleine Peyroux is folk, blues and Americana singer-songwriter Jack Barksdale from Texas. Inspired by folk, rock, and blues legends, Jack started performing original music at the age of nine and has already shared the stage with Wynonna Judd, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Junior Brown, John Fullbright, and Hayes Carll.

Ron Carter and String Quartet ETHEL Play Monk and Bach at Carnegie Hall, New York City, USA.

Tix Now Available: Ron Carter and String Quartet ETHEL Play Monk at Carnegie Hall 3/13

Acclaimed String Quartet ETHEL and Legendary Bassist Ron Carter Present REFLECTIONS ON MONK AND BACH, Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, March 13, 2025
World premiere performance of MONK SUITE — compositions and arrangements for string quartet and bass featuring the music of Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and J. S. Bach

String quartet ETHEL ’s Carnegie Hall debut

The “avatar of ‘post-classical’ music—the virtuosic string quartet ETHEL (The New Yorker)” and legendary bassist Ron Carter join forces for an unforgettable classical-jazz mashup performance at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. Centered on the music from Monk Suite: Kronos Quartet Plays Music of Thelonious Monk, an album celebrating the art of Thelonious Monk arranged originally for string quartet and bass, this remarkable concert unites two leaders of their respective musical fields for one unique genre-defying performance. (Program details are below.)

“ETHEL is thrilled and honored to share the Carnegie Hall stage with our longtime friend and Board Member, Ron Carter. We have been waiting for the right opportunity to collaborate and are honored that Maestro Carter conjured up this concert for us. This celebratory event demonstrates the flexibility and timelessness of the string quartet and how well jazz translates to it.”  — DOROTHY LAWSON, cellist and co-founder of ETHEL

Marking ETHEL’s Carnegie Hall debut, the program involves the recasting of some of Monk’s work as string quartet music, affirming the strength and universality of his music. It was 40 years ago when Carter recorded these works on the Monk Suite album (Arkiv Music, 1985) with the Kronos Quartet. JazzTimes raved at the time that “the unexpected settings and sonorities work well on a strong front line (fiddles as trumpet and tenor, viola as trombone); Carter’s role, beautifully balances between arco and pizz., elicits solos of crisp authority.” Also on the program are a few of Duke Ellington works as played by Monk as well as Carter’s jazzy-tinged version of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #3.

“I am looking forward to playing my version of what Bach’s music would sound like if he could do what I do, with the tools and jazz bassist’s perspective that I have. I hope and expect the audience will be surprised — and surprised that they enjoyed this concept.”  — RON CARTER, bassist

About ETHEL

Established in New York City in 1998, string quartet ETHEL sets the contemporary concert standard: “indefatigable and eclectic” (The New York Times), “vital and brilliant” (The New Yorker). Composer performers—Ralph Farris (viola), Kip Jones (violin), Dorothy Lawson (cello), and Corin Lee (violin)—fuse uptown panache with downtown genre mashup. ETHEL has performed across the United States and worldwide; released eight feature albums (most recently Persist with flutist Allison Loggins-Hull); guested on 50+ recordings; won a GRAMMY® with jazz legend Kurt Elling; and toured with Todd Rundgren & Joe Jackson. ETHEL champions the art and music of today, forging human connections across sound and style.

At the heart of ETHEL is a collaborative ethos — a quest for common creative expression, forged in listening and community. The quartet designs productions that inspire engagement, such as “The Red Willow,” featuring Taos Pueblo flutist Robert Mirabal, and “Signature Sessions,” a supercharged survey of the quartet’s 25+ years of inspired music-making.

ETHEL has premiered over 250 works, many of them commissioned by the quartet; ETHEL members have themselves been commissioned by The Ringling Museum of Art, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Georgia Tech, and the NEA. The quartet regularly performs music by such celebrated composers as Julia Wolfe, Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, Jessie Montgomery, Andy Akiho, and Marcelo Zarvos. Other collaborators include Bang on a Can All-Stars, Vijay Iyer, Stewart Copeland, Raven Chacon, David Byrne, Annie-B Parson, Gina Gibney, Grant McDonald, Steve Cosson, and Annie Dorsen.

ETHEL has been featured at TED Conferences; on ABC Radio Australia, SiriusXM, Conan O’Brien, John Schaefer’s New Sounds, Fred Child’s Performance Today, Randy Cohen’s Person Place Thing, NPR’s Weekend Edition; and on the soundtracks of Dan In Real Life and HBO’s Deadwood. From mid-2020 to early ‘22, ETHEL curated and produced Balcony Bar from Home, a virtual series hosted on The Metropolitan Museum’s Facebook page which has garnered nearly two million views.

ETHEL is Ensemble-in-Residence at Denison University, and Resident Ensemble at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Balcony Bar in the Great Hall. ETHELcentral.org

Full Biography

From a young age, Terence Collie was destined for a life in music. At just 12 years old, his parents gifted him a keyboard, sparking his passion and setting him on a path that would lead him to become a celebrated jazz pianist and composer. By 17, Terence was already making waves in the music scene, performing with a band in Jersey C.I. and honing his craft in the island’s hotels, pubs, and nightclubs.

His love for jazz blossomed during his regular performances at the Blue Note Jazz Bar, where he immersed himself in the genre and learned from seasoned musicians. This period saw him sharing stages with luminaries like Teddy Edwards, The Average White Band, and Georgie Fame. Returning to the UK mainland in the late 90s, Terence secured a residency at Pizza Express in Cambridge, further expanding his jazz repertoire and perfecting his technique.

The early 2000s marked a new chapter as Terence earned a diploma in music from the Open University and ventured into jazz-fusion with his group, Prison Break. He recorded two albums, showcasing his talent for composition and production. In 2013, Terence co-founded Mood Indigo Events, bringing high-quality jazz performances to new audiences and curating events with international artists.

As a versatile sideman, Terence has performed with a host of notable musicians, including The Kyle Eastwood Band, Zoë Gilby, Greg Abate and Tony Woods and gracing esteemed venues like The 606 Club, The Pheasantry, The Vortex, The Bear Club and The Stables. His talent has also been featured at major festivals such as the London Jazz Festival, Brecon Jazz Festival and the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

During the pandemic, Terence adapted by live-streaming concerts and collaborating remotely, growing a dedicated online following. His recent projects include the critically acclaimed albums “Reminiscent” and “384,400”. Terence’s quartet, featuring Roberto Manzin, achieved sold-out shows, underscoring his impact on the contemporary jazz scene.

Join us at the PizzaExpress Jazz Club Soho on 16th February to celebrate the launch of “Elements”, and experience the artistry of Terence Collie, a musician whose journey continues to inspire and captivate jazz enthusiasts worldwide.

A new year and a new opportunity to book in for a musical check-up with our distant Hebridean friends at Lost Map recordings. A self-proclaimed micro-label and collective, a decade or so since it began, is very much pushing forward, onwards, upwards and away, uncovering new idea and new sounds, unshackled by style or genre.

Anything but boring and predictable, the label’s guiding voice Pictish Trail will debut new songs and stories alongside the Scottish Album of the Year nominees Afterlands. We will also introduce you to a new voice and member of the label - producer and songwriter Flo-Lines.

When the pandemic descended, Rick Anthony (The Phantom Band / Rick Redbeard) and David McAulay (Strike the Colours) began exchanging ideas remotely, creating the contours of what would become their new project together Afterlands. The captivating album We Are the Animals in the Night’released in 2023 on Lost Map carves a crepuscular sound world, where shadows, dreams, memories and fears overlap and intertwine with astonishing results as you’ll hear firsthand today.

Released as part of Lost Map’s Postmap Club subscription service, Flo Lines’s debut single I was biding my time revealed an extended collage-like approach to music making, informed by her background in radio production and audio-visual art. Combining sounds both found and played, she blends compositions from different takes of songs captured in different spaces both indoors and out, to create slow sonic medleys that transport the listener through different places and feelings.

Isle-of-Eigg dwelling electro-acoustic psych-pop wonder Pictish Trail, AKA Johnny Lynch, released his fifth album Island Family in 2022 to critical acclaim from The Observer and The Times to Mojo,  Uncut, Loud & Quiet and BBC 6 Music. Having toured the world both as a headliner and as support for artists including Belle & Sebastian, Pavement, Mogwai, Sea Power, Slow Club and KT Tunstall, he has performed at festivals including Glastonbury, Field Day, Bestival,  Deer Shed, Celtic Connections, the Edinburgh Fringe and Green Man*  (*all 22 instalments to date).

Further event details: Cafe and bar open. An event for all ages. Pay-What-You-Can entry in advance or on the door (£12 per adult suggestion), subject to availability/capacity. The doors open at midday and the music begins a 1pm.

54th International Jazz Week Burghausen: Musical highlights and a small record
The 54th International Jazz Week Burghausen, from 26 to 30 March 2025, will feature top-class artists, a varied program and a small record:

Record participation in the Burghausen Jazz Award 2025
For the first time in the history of the Burghausen Jazz Prize, the mark of 100 valid applications has been exceeded: 108 entries from 48 countries mark a new milestone. Compared to previous years (2024: 70, 2023: 60, 2020/21: 42, 2019: 35), this development shows the growing international importance of the competition. A total of 426 musicians took part, including artists from the USA, Canada, China and Colombia. Applications from Germany, Italy, France, Poland, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary and Norway are particularly well represented.
The decision on who will win the Burghausen Jazz Prize 2025 will be made on March 25 in the Burghausen Stadtsaal. Here, five bands selected by the jury in a blind process will compete in the live final.

Wide-ranging program with international stars and newcomers
From March 26 to 30, 2025, Jazz Week promises a festival experience in a class of its own.

Jazz Week will open in the Wackerhalle with a performance by the 2025 Jazz Prize winner, followed by a concert by celebrated and multi-award-winning star vocalist Gregory Porter. On 27 March, the Norwegian jazz collective OJKOS will delight audiences with their innovative soundscapes before saxophone legend Kenny Garrett takes to the stage with his acclaimed program Sounds From The Ancestors.

On the Friday of the festival, the musical action is spread across several venues: In the Wackerhalle, the energetic Lehmanns Brothers and Billy Cobham’ Spectrum 50 with the Brazilian percussionist Marco Lobo will provide excitement. At the same time, the Bundesjazzorchester presents a concert in the Stadtsaal and the JUZ invites you to a club night with Karaba, Grande Mahogany and DJ Dancekowsky.

Saturday starts with an atmospheric afternoon of blues in the Wackerhalle, where the Jimmy Reiter Band and Vanessa Collier deliver rousing performances. After a brief respite, the Wackerhalle is all about women in the evening with the Italian-born singer, pianist and composer Afra Kane and the Fabia Mantwill Orchestra, while the accordion virtuoso Louise Jallu and the exciting improvisation project Radiolectric “Rodeo” by the Kreusch brothers, with singer and performance artist Sabina Sciubba, also set musical exclamation marks in the Stadtsaal. The day is rounded off with the legendary Jazznight, which invites you to linger and discover at various locations in Burghausen’s old town.

The “Next in Jazz” program for young talents on Sunday will once again conclude the International Jazz Week and the acts Knobil, Prim feat. Lukas Lauermann and Antiánima will provide a promising glimpse into the future of jazz.

Picturesque Burghausen becomes a musical hot spot
With its mix of world stars, international talent and a unique atmosphere, the International Jazz Week Burghausen will continue to attract music fans from all over the world in 2025. The festival thus cements Burghausen’s reputation as one of Europe’s leading jazz hot spots.

Featuring music from albums like The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter, and Mingus, this project draws much of its repertoire from Mitchell’s outstanding live album Shadows And Light, which captured the essence of her tour with some of jazz’s greatest musicians.

The band includes legendary jazz guitarist Pete Oxley, and alongside Hattie’s captivating vocals, Hejira will bring to life the great songs from Joni Mitchell’s back catalogue, including ‘Amelia,’ ‘Woodstock,’ ‘A Case Of You,’ ‘Song For Sharon,’ and more!
