Serious are announcing their Summer Jazz Series, in which a handpicked collection of global jazz stars will take to the stage at the Barbican and Cadogan Hall across June and July. This news is led by a very special three night stint from legendary keyboardist and composer Herbie Hancock whose last performance at the Barbican in 2023 was described as “completely engrossing” by The Guardian.

Herbie Hancock returns to the Barbican Hall with a 3-night UK exclusive residency to celebrate his 85th birthday and over 50 years since his first ever London show, at the historic Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park. Herbie Hancock is a true icon of modern music. Throughout his explorations, he has transcended limitations and genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice. With an illustrious career spanning five decades and 14 Grammy Awards, he continues to amaze audiences across the globe.

There are few artists in the music industry who have had more influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B than Herbie Hancock. As the immortal Miles Davis said in his autobiography, “Herbie was the step after Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, and I haven’t heard anybody yet who has come after him.”

Now in the sixth decade of his professional life, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: in the forefront of world culture, technology, business and music. Though one can’t track exactly where he will go next, he is sure to leave his inimitable imprint wherever he lands. This exclusive residency is promoted alongside Marshall Arts.

Tigran Hamasyan is considered one of the most remarkable and distinctive pianists and composers of his generation seamlessly fusing potent jazz improvisation and progressive rock with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia. On 16 June, Hamasyan returns to the Barbican Hall to perform a special concert in which he brings his latest album, The Bird of a Thousand Voices to life, live with a quartet. This follows his Sold Out performance at Cadogan Hall as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival last year. Opening for Hamasyan is singer, violinist and composer Alice Zawadzki who has established herself in the peripheries and crossovers of the classical, folk, jazz and art-pop worlds. The award-winning singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer has released three albums of her solo work, the latest her highly lauded Za Górami, released on the iconic ECM Records in 2024.

One of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path, which embodies the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism and pop allure. Performing at the Barbican as a trio including Felix Moseholm and Jorge Rossy on 24 June as part of the Summer Jazz Series, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. With his self-proclaimed affection for popular music and classical training, “Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years” (The New York Times).

Described as “the finest banjo player on the planet” by the Guardian, Béla Fleck’s new all-star trio completed by harpist Edmar Castañeda, and drummer Antonio Sanchez who composed the soundtrack to Oscar winning film Birdman (2014), and received a Grammy award in the same year for the soundtrack. Playing original repertoire, much of it collaboratively written, this trio embarks nightly on fearless explorations that audiences will find irresistible — rich with strong melodies, gorgeous harmony and grooves that twist and turn while feeling fantastic. The Worcester jazz scene is expanding with new Live Jazz Sessions at Copper Beech starting on Sunday. The event is organised by local guitarist Alex Albrow at Copper Beech Brewery & Taproom, 6-8 Britannia Road, Worcester WR1 3BQ, from 3pm until 7pm.



It’ll feature a mixture of Jazz, Funk, Soul and Hip Hop tunes provided by the house band featuring Alex on guitar, Robert Andrew Mcintosh (drums), Matt Ball (keys) and Wayne Matthews (bass). There will also be a special guest vocalist Ellie Williams joining the house band for the second set singing some standards and a few curve balls in there too.

The third set will open up to a jam for 45 minutes where vocalists and instrumentalists can sign up to play a couple of tunes each before closing again with the house band. The aim of the session is to bring some of this music to the Worcester scene on a bi-weekly basis with the motto being ‘you just hang, we’ll be over here, listen if you want’.

Hampshire’s largest jazz and blues festival has announced a stellar line-up for this year’s musical extravaganza.

Petersfield Jazz & Blues Festival 2025 is all set for Saturday, June 14th 2025 and will showcase world-leading talent from12 acts, featuring musicians who have played and collaborated with legends including Jeff Beck, Amy Winehouse, James Taylor Quartet, Van Morrison, Madonna, Incognito, Groove Armada, Bill Bruford and many more.

The festival, which has been promoted by Soweto Kinch of BBC’s Radio 3 ‘Round Midnight ‘will put the spotlight on an array of artists, many of whom are recognized internationally and some of whom also live in Hampshire and the surrounding areas.

Petersfield Jazz & Blues Festival 2025 takes place in the stunningly beautiful grounds of Churcher’s College, a leading co-ed private day school founded in 1722.

Colin Clark’s inspiration for the Petersfield Jazz & Blues Festival came from running The Strange Fruit Jazz Club in Petersfield, which takes over Gallery No.30 on the third Friday of each month. With a wealth of musicians, artists, and actors in the Petersfield area, the success of Strange Fruit highlighted the need for a dedicated jazz festival.

About the line-up

The Full Circle Quartet has crafted an album inspired by the South Downs and was recognized by Jazzwise magazine as one of their top 100 picks for 2023. Under the leadership of the esteemed bassist Terry Pack, the band boasts an impressive array of talent. They delighted audiences last year and are returning due to popular demand.

Jazza Samba features the exceptional tenor saxophonist Mark Crooks and the award-winning guitarist Nigel Price, presenting a fresh take on the classic ‘Jazz Samba’. This performance pays homage to the iconic 1962 album by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd.

Betty Accorsi is a talented saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer originally from Italy, now residing in Brighton. She began her classical saxophone training at a young age at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan. The Betty Accorsi Quartet has made notable appearances at venues such as Pizza Express Soho, the Pheasantry Chelsea, Hampstead Jazz Club, the Verdict Brighton, and the Brighton Jazz Festival.

Jana Varga: Blending a variety of influences, including classical music and the songwriting styles of Janis Ian, James Taylor, and the folk sounds of Paul Simon, Jana has developed a unique voice that continues to grow.  Currently, she regularly appears in the acclaimed ‘Joni Reimagined’ show, a tribute to Joni Mitchell’s music, where she has recorded and performed live alongside platinum-selling artist Rumer.

A festival one-off ‘super-group’ features top guitarists Nicolas Meier, Pete Roth, and bassist Stefan Redtenbacher performing for the first time ever as a trio. Their CVs are hugely impressive;
UK-based guitarist Nicolas Meier has carved a reputation out as one of the world’s most original and uniquely talented guitarists. His considerable talents drew the attention of rock guitar legend, Jeff Beck, who made Nicolas a mainstay in The Jeff Beck Group—carrying him on two world tours during the course of the last several years.
Pete Roth is a versatile artist and accomplished session guitarist, born in Germany, where his musical journey began in the heart of a family deeply rooted in music.
His new endeavour with his trio featuring bassist Mike Pratt and legendary drummer, Bill Bruford.
Stefan Redtenbacher was born in Salzburg and though most popular musicians are self-taught, Stefan took the formal training route, his natural talent and capacity for study taking him from the Vienna Conservatory to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Chichester University where he assembled his Funkestra, purveyors of a deft line in what their leader, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, terms ‘Strudel Funk’.

Rainey’s Revue showcasing music from the 1920s/30s/40s with classic songs by Ma Rainey. The music has been arranged by Richard Exall (sax/clarinet/flute) in conjunction with Musical Director, Dom Barnett (piano).  The established rhythm section of Sam Kelly (drums) and Marianne Windham (double-bass) are complimented by the acoustic jazz-influences of Tony Qunta (acoustic guitar).

US-born pianist and composer Ethan Iverson is probably best known as a founding member of the iconic New York based band The Bad Plus, a game-changing collective who the New York Times described as “…better than anyone at melding the sensibilities of post-60’s jazz and indie rock.” During his 17-year tenure TBP performed in venues as diverse as the Village Vanguard and Carnegie Hall and collaborated with the likes of Joshua Redman, Bill Frisell and the Mark Morris Dance Group. 

Now Ethan presents himself with a solo program capitalising on his long interest in film noir, mysterious science fiction, and other cinematic pursuits: Into the Dark. Indeed, during his time with the Bad Plus, many of the pieces were created as “soundtracks” for imaginary narratives. For this solo recital, Iverson will weave a spellbinding web of pianistic mastery, bringing original music as well as covers of famous “dark” themes from television and cinema. The Curtom Orchestra are an all-star band featuring members of Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies, Incognito and more who will be celebrating the life and music of Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions

It is now over 20 years since the passing of Singer-Songwriter & Producer Curtis Mayfield. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Curtis Mayfield commenced his musical career as part of a gospel choir.

After meeting Jerry Butler he formed The Impressions in 1956. The Impressions recorded many classics including ‘We’re a Winner’, ‘I’m So Proud’, ‘It’s All Right’, ‘For Your Precious Love’ and the politically-charged ‘People Get Ready’.

After leaving The Impressions in 1970, Curtis Mayfield released a slew of socially conscious albums such as ‘Curtis’ (1970), ‘Super Fly’ (1972), ‘Back To The World’ (1973) and more.

The Curtom Orchestra will be performing all of the classics and fan favourites from throughout the career of Curtis Mayfield tonight.

What’s your favourite day of the year? World Penguin Day? Random Act of Kindness Day? Or maybe Ice Cream for Breakfast Day? The one we’ve come to look forward to is the 88th day of the year – when we like to clear our schedule to spend some quality time with the dashing, demure and dynamic music machine that is the grand piano.

Simply put we will use this once again as an excuse to put the piano into the spotlight. Across our fifteen plus years we’ve had every kind - from toy pianos to a player piano, from hacked pianos to double ping-ponging pianos.

On this occasion we’ll be placing the piano in the round and invite musicians old and new to join us and bring us closer to the merry march of dancing keys and hammers. We’ll announce our guests nearer the time - but it would be lovely to see you once again around the piano on the 88th day of 2025.

Arctic Circle’s Daylight Music has, for over fifteen years, become an important part of London’s live music scene, with a weird and wonderful mix of musicians presenting ideas and storytelling in music and sound, alongside delicious cake, in some of the most splendid and iconic venues.

eavesdropping returns for another four-day festival, curated by Juliet Fraser, which includes four evening double-bill events (at Cafe OTO) and a weekend-long forum of provocations (at Vortex Jazz Club). Eight artists working at the experimental fringes or intersections of various musical genres will share new work, stimulating our ears and our imaginations. During this year’s forum we will explore the topic ‘Experiments in Magic’, with weighty talks by Zuleika Lebow & Sara Mohr-Pietsch and a
global soundwalk led by Ximena Alarcón-Díaz sitting alongside shorter contributions gathered through our annual Call for Provocations.

While the days of playing with the National Jazz Youth Orchestra are long gone they did help kick-start Mike’s musical career. He then spent 20 years working with composer/pianist Michael Garrick, touring Malaysia, making CDs, and getting his face on national radio. He often freelanced with the Liverpool Phil and the Hallé and now appears with Pete Long’s Echoes of Ellington Orchestra.

Career highlights include a week at Ronnie Scott’s Club, performing at the World Sax Congress in Slovenia and Strasbourg, a gig with the Wayne Shorter Quartet with the Liverpool Phil and even playing in John and Cleo’s Christmas Show.

He runs his own jazz quartet and writes for and leads his octet, Boplicity. After 20 years heading Jazz Studies at RNCM in Manchester, Mike now splits his time between performing all over the UK, composing, and running jazz workshops both at home and abroad.

Tigran Hamasyan is considered one of the most remarkable and distinctive pianists and composers of his generation. A piano virtuoso with groove power, Hamasyan seamlessly fuses potent jazz improvisation and progressive rock with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia.

On 16 June, Hamasyan returns to the Barbican Hall to perform a special concert following his Sold Out performance at Cadogan Hall as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival last year. This show is the first of a special series of shows taking place this summer, more details to follow soon.

Born in Gyumri, Armenia, in 1987, his musical journey began in his childhood home, where he was exposed to a diverse array of musical influences leading to him playing piano at the age of three, performing in festivals and competitions by the time he was eleven, and winning the Montreux Jazz Festival’s piano competition in 2003.

Hamasyan’s new conceptual album “The Bird of a Thousand Voices” was released in August 2024. Hamasyan composed, scored, and arranged the much-anticipated project blending its traditional folk footprints with rock influences. The recently released double album is inspired by an ancient Armenian tale in which a hero travels into unseen realms to find and bring back a mythical bird – whose thousand different songs will awaken people again and bring harmony to the world.

In addition to awards and critical acclaim, Hamasyan has built a dedicated following worldwide, as well as praise from Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau and the late Chick Corea.

This week, the Barbican announces an additional performance as part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s residency at the Barbican, completing the line up for the 14-16 March 2025 weekend. Opening the residency will be the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra and the Guildhall Ellingtonian Band – a performance that will sit alongside workshops with young musicians at the neighbouring Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Additionally, while in London the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra, with leaders from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, will deliver workshops and performances with young people from local schools in Hackney.

The next generation of jazz musicians open the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s Barbican residency as the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra (JLCYO) takes to the stage alongside the Guildhall Ellingtonian Band.
Led by acclaimed trumpeter and Juilliard faculty member Tatum Greenblatt, the JLCYO brings together some of the most gifted young musicians from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. As the premier youth jazz ensemble in the tri-state area and the top group of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz Academy, they deliver performances that transform aspiring artists into professional-level musicians. They will also be joined on the evening by special guest soloists, to be announced at a later date.

The Barbican’s resident orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano join forces with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) to present JLCO Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis’ Symphony No 4 ‘The Jungle’. Blending jazz, blues and classical music, The Jungle is a wild and brilliant portrait of New York City in all its dazzling, high-pressure, cosmopolitan glory. This UK Premiere performance is a co-presentation by the Barbican and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s weekend-long residency at the Barbican, JLCO Artistic Director, trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis’s Symphony No 4 encompasses glimpses of ragtime and elements of popular dance music. Its six movements combine rapid and hard-swinging fast passages with poignant, blues-tinged melodies and colourful, plushly orchestrated jazz chords. The ‘La Esquina’ movement pays homage the city’s Afro-Latin culture while the work’s finale sees wailing brass spin bold melodies over rhythmic riffs.
The evening will open with a performance by the JLCO and Wynton Marsalis of a selection of works by Duke Ellington, before joining with the LSO in the second half.

Led by trumpeter, composer and band leader Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra presents the European premiere of Marsalis’ new work: The Democracy! Suite, as well as a selection drawn from the globally renowned ensemble’s vast canon of jazz masterworks.
“Jazz music is the perfect metaphor for democracy” says Wynton Marsalis. At a time when America, and indeed, the whole world, finds itself at a crossroads, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer was inspired to write a poignant work, The Democracy! Suite, which proves that the joy and beauty of jazz can bring us all closer together. Released as a digital album (JLCO inc., 2021) recorded by Marsalis and a septet comprising members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, The Democracy! Suite features impassioned compositions that are a reflection of turbulent times, urging us into action.
Presented as a two-part concert at the Barbican, a septet will perform the European premiere of The Democracy! Suite in the first half, after which the full orchestra will perform a selection of works drawn from their vast canon.

Much acclaimed jazz drummer Clark Tracey has been leading his own bands since 1981 and currently leads an ever-evolving quintet as well as tribute bands to his father, the late Stan Tracey.

His latest quintet features a few of the most exciting young musicians today. They recently recorded their first CD, which is due for release in the New Year. The unusual inclusion of a vocalist in Clark’s quintet, next to a horn player, offers another soundscape with which to work.  An exceptional vocalise artist, Emily Masser adds rhythm and words from the heart of Bebop, as well as beautiful lyrics.

National Youth Jazz Wales
Empowering the next jazz generation in Wales

National Youth Jazz Wales is an ambitious new partnership between Jazz Explorers Cymru, National Youth Arts Wales and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, supported by the Arts Council of Wales and National Music Service Wales. Together, we aim to build a new talent development programme to inspire and support young jazz musicians throughout Wales.

We are now inviting aspiring young jazz musicians to a 3-day course of workshops, masterclasses and rehearsals, working with internationally renowned jazz educators, culminating in an informal public performance. It will be joyful, challenging and collaborative.

14-16 April 2025 at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff.

The course is open to all instrumentalists and singers between the ages of 14-22. You don’t need prior jazz experience, but we suggest that everyone should be at least Grade 5 (or equivalent) standard on their instrument. Participants will be split into different groups based on their age and experience to ensure everyone receives the right level of support.

The lead tutors will be Paula Gardiner, Huw Warren and Andrew Bain (Head of Jazz at RWCMD) – with additional support from other specialist tutors and jazz students. Scroll down for more information.

Whilst the full cost of the course has been subsidised by the partner organisations and the Arts Council of Wales, there is a nominal cost to participants (see below). The level of the fee is dependent on whether you need accommodation and how far you are travelling. Bursaries are also available for those from lower income households, to ensure that everyone can take part. The course will be welcoming and inclusive, but please contact us if you have any concerns or questions.

Our tutors are drawn from the most experienced jazz educators and performers in Wales, including the current and previous Heads of Jazz at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Details of more tutors will be added below, when available.

Andrew Bain
Andrew is Head of Jazz at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Musician, educator and researcher, he is one of the leading performers and educators in Europe having performed with luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis, Natalie Cole, Kenny Wheeler, Randy Brecker, John Taylor, NDR Big Band, Dave Liebman and Bob Mintzer, including a New York residency.

Paula Gardiner
Paula was Head of Jazz at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama until retiring in 2023 to resume her freelance career.
During the nineties and noughties, Paula founded several bands including the Paula Gardiner Quartet, 6, The Paula Gardiner Trio, Paula Gardiner 6.0 and the anarchic big band that was Wales’ Jazz Composers. She has worked internationally, taking her own music to the US and composing/conducting a major project in Wales and South Africa for the cultural Olympiad, 2012.

Huw Warren
Welsh pianist and composer Huw Warren has an international reputation for innovative and eclectic music making. His playing and compositions have featured on major stages worldwide and as well as being frequently broadcast. Huw has appeared on over 50 recordings, including a set of highly individual albums under his own name. His approach to jazz education centres around the broadest possible definition of genre, and a focus on developing the individual voice both in improvising and composition.

As part of this year’s Belle Vue Belle Vue Arts Festival theme, ‘Movement’, SY.Gigs is thrilled to present an extraordinary evening of music and exploration. Bringing together the Pan-Asian, New-Age drone psychedelic band Tengger and the avant-garde multi-instrumentalist and experimentalist Seaming To family band.

This event promises to push the boundaries of sound and experience. Hosted at the stunning St Alkmund’s Church.

Tengger is a traveling musical family, made up of Pan-Asian couple, Itta (from South Korea) and Marqido (from Japan), who create their brand of psychedelic New-Age drone magic through the use of voice, Indian harmonium, and Toy instruments (played by Itta) and synths & electronics (played by Marqido).Tengger (meaning ‘unlimited expanse of sky’ in Mongolian) to mark the expansion of the family. It also means ‘huge sea’ in Hungarian.

Composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer Seaming To was born in London and comes from a family of concert pianists. She has appeared on BBC Radio (Radio 1/Radio 3/6 Music) and performed and toured the UK, Europe and the Far East.

John is a highly respected pianist and composer who has earned a formidable reputation on the British jazz scene over many years. Growing up in a musical family his gifts emerged at an early age and by the age of sixteen he was studying clarinet and piano at the Royal Academy of Music – an institution where, at that time in the mid-1960s, jazz was neither studied nor valued. John’s abilities were eventually fully acknowledged in later years when he was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) for his services to music
Perhaps best known for his 26-year stint as accompanist to Dame Cleo Laine, John’s impeccable credentials include playing in the big bands of Sir John Dankworth and Maynard Ferguson and supporting scores of visiting guest stars from America, most memorably a week-long gig with Chet Baker at The Canteen. He has worked with legends of the British scene such as Ronnie Ross, Peter King, Kenny Wheeler, Tommy Whittle, Tony Coe, Simon Spillett and Alan Barnes, and broadcast and recorded extensively,  including a number of highly acclaimed albums by his own trio
In his biographical notes, John writes:
For me music, and especially jazz, is about togetherness, about individual input being merged with others to make a whole piece of music.
I was not enthusiastic about the piano as a jazz instrument until I heard Bill Evans. He absorbed the music of the European composers Debussy, Ravel and even Brahms, which he welded into his own very special jazz language. I embraced that almost immediately and even today he is s till the most influential figure in my playing; not in a copying sense I hope, but in an inspirational way.
This is a priceless opportunity to see one of Britain’s most acclaimed jazz pianists playing the music he loves – not to be missed. As the saying goes, ‘Everybody Digs Bill Evans’.

In the second collaborative show from Clun Valley Jazz and Tomorrow’s Warriors, we are joined by the Donovan Haffner 5tet.

Donovan has played with a multitude of professional musicians including the big contemporary British names such as Moses Boyd, Charlie Stacey, and Jay Phelps, Balimaya Project, and European contemporary names such as Rasmus Sorenson. Donovan is also included in Jay Phelps’ Miles Davis Kind of Blue Project who play shows around the UK. He has been selected as a finalist for the ‘Jazz Newcomer of the Year award in the prestigious ‘Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2024’. Donovan was also a finalist at the ‘Music Company’s Tina May Award’ in 2024.

Gallowstreet, the Dutch brass band with an attitude. Hailing from the Galgenstraat in Amsterdam they have refined their sound through the course of 5 albums.

Over a decade of innovating brass music, Gallowstreet has been up and at it. Armed with 7 horn players and 1 drummer the band employs a wide range of musical genres to tell stories with their compositions, most of them beat driven, all of them with anthemic quality.

Gallowstreet has proven to be a big inspiration for the emerging European Brass Band scene. There’s not a week that goes by without a video of one of the songs being covered by young enthusiastic brass bands from around the globe. Their songs have seen re-arrangements for a wide range of ensembles and Gallowstreet has been a consistent source of inspiration for other bands.

Rob Luft is undeniably one of the most exciting jazz guitarists in Europe of his generation. Hailing from London, this award-winning virtuoso has garnered comparisons to legends such as John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia, and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Rob is a true rising star, possessing a rare combination of talent as a guitarist, band-leader, composer, and captivating communicator. He won the Kenny Wheeler Award after graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 2016, followed by the release of his debut album “Riser” in 2017. Luft’s joy in music-making, humility, and ability to connect with other musicians quickly made him one of the most sought-after instrumentalists to emerge from the UK in recent years.

His highly anticipated third album “Dahab Days” was released on Edition Records in October 2023 and reveals Rob’s willingness to push boundaries and expand his sonic palette. Drawing inspiration from his time in Egypt’s Dahab region during the pandemic, he infuses the album with a unique ambiance that permeates his compositions.

Western jazz blended with Ghanaian and Nigerian dance styles, embracing a musical culture dating back centuries
Lekan Babalola is a two-time Grammy Award-winning musician, film director, and conceptual artist with over 40 years in the arts. Awarded his first Grammy in 2006 for performances on the late Ali Farka Toure’s album ‘In the Heart of the Moon’, he was awarded a second at the 49th Grammy awards in 2008 for his work on the American jazz diva Cassandra Wilson’s album ‘Loverly’.

Lekan started his career playing in the Yoruba Christian Church owned by his father. As custodians of Yoruba tradition his family taught him first hand Yoruba art and culture and this has influenced all his work. He also received a cultural and political apprenticeship from the late Fela Kuti.

The Sacred Funk project has been going several years with Lekan on percussion and his wife Kate Luxmoore on clarinet, joined by various other musicians in the past including Reed Bass, who has played for us in December 2023, and Christos Stylianides (trumpet) who will be appearing with Jas Kayser & Chums in January.  In the current lineup we welcome back our friends Josh Vadiveloo (appeared with Dan Lockheart in September 2023) on bass and Reuben Reynolds (appeared with Reed Bass in December 2023) on guitar.

Piano Day, is an annual worldwide event founded by a group of like-minded people. It takes place on the 88th day of the year because of the number of keys on the instrument being celebrated.
As part of International Piano Day 2025 SY.Gigs is proud to be hosting two exceptional female artists, Marysia Osu and Hanakiv (Johanna Kivimagi).
Marysia Osu is a Polish born, London based harpist, producer and composer known for her innovative blend of classical, ambient and jazz. Osu’s work reflects a deep connection to beauty, emotion and self-expression.
She is a member of Levitation Orchestra and has blessed records with the dreamy sonics of the harp for artists such as Maxwell Owin & Joe Armon Jones, Puma Blue, Alabaster dePlume, Laura Misch, Yazmin Lacey and Loyle Carner. She released her debut album “harp, beats & dreams” via Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings in 2024.
Hanakiv is a young composer and musician from Estonia (now based in London) who creates meditative piano-based ambient music with elements from classical and electronic music. ‘Goodbyes’ was her debut recording in 2023 on Matthew Halsall’s label Gondwana. She draws on influences as diverse as Tim Hecker, Björk “Vespertine”, Kara-Lis Coverdale, Arvo Pärt, Erkki-Sven Tüür and Aphex Twin as well as her own cultural heritage.

Formed in 1977 to promote Ian Durys’ album New Boots and Panties on the first Stiff Records tour of the U.K. - Chaz Jankel, Norman Watt-Roy, Charlie Charles, John Turnbull and Micky Gallagher - became known as The Blockheads.

As Ian Dury & The Blockheads they went back out on tour, and in 1978 released What a Waste a single that reached #5 in the U.K. charts. They were then joined by saxophonist Davey Payne and toured the U.S.A supporting Lou Reed.

In 1979 Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick (#1 in the UK charts) and Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3 (#3 in the UK charts) were released along with the classic Do It Yourself LP.

Ian Dury & The Blockheads disbanded in 1982 only to reform in the early 1990’s to perform at the ‘Madstock’ Festival in Finsbury Park headlined by Madness.

The “avatar of ‘post-classical’ music—the virtuosic string quartet ETHEL (The New Yorker)” and legendary bassist Ron Carter join forces for an unforgettable classical-jazz mashup performance at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. Centered on the music from Monk Suite: Kronos Quartet Plays Music of Thelonious Monk, an album celebrating the art of Thelonious Monk arranged originally for string quartet and bass, this remarkable concert unites two leaders of their respective musical fields for one unique genre-defying performance. Marking ETHEL’s Carnegie Hall debut, the program involves the recasting of some of Monk’s work as string quartet music, affirming the strength and universality of his music. It was 40 years ago when Carter recorded these works on the Monk Suite album (Arkiv Music, 1985) with the Kronos Quartet. JazzTimes raved at the time that “the unexpected settings and sonorities work well on a strong front line (fiddles as trumpet and tenor, viola as trombone); Carter’s role, beautifully balances between arco and pizz., elicits solos of crisp authority.” Also on the program are a few of Duke Ellington works as played by Monk as well as Carter’s jazzy-tinged version of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #3.

About RON CARTER    

RON CARTER is among the most original, prolific, and influential bassists in jazz and has played on seminal albums in many other genres. He has recorded over 2200 albums, and has a Guinness world record to prove it! In Jazz: From 1963 to 1968, he was a member of the acclaimed Miles Davis Quintet. He can be heard on many iconic jazz records of the 60’s and 70’s such as Speak No Evil, Maiden Voyage, Speak Like a Child, Red Clay to name a few. In other music genres: After leaving the quintet he embarked on a prolific 50-year free-lance career that spanned vastly different music genres and continues to this day. He recorded with Roberta Flack and Aretha Franklin, with Gil Scott Heron on Pieces of a Man, appeared on the seminal hip-hop album Low End Theory with A Tribe Called Quest, played on albums by Billy Joel, Bette Midler, Paul Simon and more and wrote and recorded pieces for string quartets and Bach chorales for 2-8 basses.

As a leader: Carter has spent at least half the year on worldwide tours with his various groups. The Ron Carter Trio, The Ron Carter Foursight Quartet, the Ron Carter Nonet and Ron Carter’s Great Big Band. He has recorded multiple albums with his groups. As an author: Carter shares his expertise in the series of books he authored, where he explains his creative process and teaches bassists of all levels to improve their skills and develop their own unique sound. He also penned
his autobiography “Finding the Right Notes.” In 2021 he pioneered a new type of music transcription with Chartography, showing not only the bass line but also how the band responded and how the entire tune transformed over time.

As a teacher: He was Artistic Director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Studies while it was located in Boston and, after 18 years on the faculty of the Music Department of The City College of New York, he is now Distinguished Professor Emeritus. He also taught at the Juilliard School and at Manhattan School of Music.

Awards and Honorifics: He is a three-time GRAMMY® winner, was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette for his contributions to Japan-US relations, the medallion and title of Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by France, numerous MVP and Outstanding Bassist awards by the music press.

He has seven honorary doctorates from Juilliard, Berklee, University of Michigan, New England Conservatory, Clark University, Manhattan School of Music and University of Rochester. The 54th International Jazz Week Burghausen, from 26 to 30 March 2025, will feature top-class artists, a varied program and a small record:

Record participation in the Burghausen Jazz Award 2025
For the first time in the history of the Burghausen Jazz Prize, the mark of 100 valid applications has been exceeded: 108 entries from 48 countries mark a new milestone. Compared to previous years (2024: 70, 2023: 60, 2020/21: 42, 2019: 35), this development shows the growing international importance of the competition. A total of 426 musicians took part, including artists from the USA, Canada, China and Colombia. Applications from Germany, Italy, France, Poland, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary and Norway are particularly well represented.
The decision on who will win the Burghausen Jazz Prize 2025 will be made on March 25 in the Burghausen Stadtsaal. Here, five bands selected by the jury in a blind process will compete in the live final.

Wide-ranging program with international stars and newcomers
From March 26 to 30, 2025, Jazz Week promises a festival experience in a class of its own.

Jazz Week will open in the Wackerhalle with a performance by the 2025 Jazz Prize winner, followed by a concert by celebrated and multi-award-winning star vocalist Gregory Porter. On 27 March, the Norwegian jazz collective OJKOS will delight audiences with their innovative soundscapes before saxophone legend Kenny Garrett takes to the stage with his acclaimed program Sounds From The Ancestors.

On the Friday of the festival, the musical action is spread across several venues: In the Wackerhalle, the energetic Lehmanns Brothers and Billy Cobham’ Spectrum 50 with the Brazilian percussionist Marco Lobo will provide excitement. At the same time, the Bundesjazzorchester presents a concert in the Stadtsaal and the JUZ invites you to a club night with Karaba, Grande Mahogany and DJ Dancekowsky.

Saturday starts with an atmospheric afternoon of blues in the Wackerhalle, where the Jimmy Reiter Band and Vanessa Collier deliver rousing performances. After a brief respite, the Wackerhalle is all about women in the evening with the Italian-born singer, pianist and composer Afra Kane and the Fabia Mantwill Orchestra, while the accordion virtuoso Louise Jallu and the exciting improvisation project Radiolectric “Rodeo” by the Kreusch brothers, with singer and performance artist Sabina Sciubba, also set musical exclamation marks in the Stadtsaal. The day is rounded off with the legendary Jazznight, which invites you to linger and discover at various locations in Burghausen’s old town.

The “Next in Jazz” program for young talents on Sunday will once again conclude the International Jazz Week and the acts Knobil, Prim feat. Lukas Lauermann and Antiánima will provide a promising glimpse into the future of jazz.

Picturesque Burghausen becomes a musical hot spot
With its mix of world stars, international talent and a unique atmosphere, the International Jazz Week Burghausen will continue to attract music fans from all over the world in 2025. The festival thus cements Burghausen’s reputation as one of Europe’s leading jazz hot spots.

British Progressive Rock Group CURVED AIR

Curved Air are a pioneering English progressive rock group formed in 1970 by musicians from mixed artistic backgrounds, including classical, folk, and electronic sound. The resulting sound of the band was a mixture of progressive rock, folk rock, and fusion with classical elements.

Along with High Tide and East of Eden, Curved Air were one of the first rock bands after It’s a Beautiful Day, The Flock and The United States of America to feature a violin.

Curved Air released eight studio albums, the first three of which broke the UK Top 20, and had a hit single with Back Street Luv which reached #4 in the UK Singles Chart.

Today, Brick Lane Jazz Festival unveils the first round of their 2025 line-up.

Newly announced headliners include new age zen master Laraaji, French-Caribbean soul / funk rising star Adi Oasis and R&B trailblazer and producer-in-demand, Ragz Originale. Elsewhere the festival will feature appearances from rising stars in the jazz scene such as Ife Ogunjobi (winner of this year’s Parliamentary Jazz “Best Newcomer” award) and the Rebecca Vasmant Ensemble, as well as showcasing some of the city’s best electronic and experimental outfits with the likes of Last Nubian, Marysia Osu, and Marla Kether set to play. BLJF will also celebrate global artists with sets from Irish Jamaican artist Rio Rainz, Ukranian harpist Alina Bzhezhinska and Ghanian Dutch artist Bnnyhunna, as well as further spotlighting the ever-expanding R&B / soul crossover scene with performances from Jelani Blackman and Astrønne. Brick Lane Jazz Festival has been making waves on the UK music scene, growing from its modest debut across four venues in 2022 to a 12-stage extravaganza spanning Brick Lane and Shoreditch in just three years. With over 100 artists set to perform across this three-day celebration, the festival has quickly become a fixture on the music calendar. Crowned #1 Best London Festival by The Standard and #1 Best UK Festival by TimeOut in 2023, the festival has only amplified its impact in 2024 with the launch of BLJF Presents—a year-round event series showcasing the UK’s most exciting artists, record labels, and parties. After sell-out shows in Manchester, Glasgow, and London this October, BLJF Presents is heading to new heights with a major event at the iconic Barbican Centre planned for early spring 2025, plus more regional stops in Bristol, Brighton, and even Paris later in the year.

The festival will once again partner with Jazz re:freshed and Tomorrow’s Warriors, both vital community organizations that nurture emerging talent in UK jazz. Tomorrow’s Warriors will be back as the festival’s charity partner, bringing an Emerging Talent Stage for fans to catch the next wave of jazz stars as they debut the freshest live material.

The festival’s stages are hosted by some of the most important venues in East London including Village Underground, Ninety One Living Room (hosted by Jazz re:freshed), Rough Trade East, 93 Feet East, Rich Mix, Juju’s Bar & Stage, and many more. As always, those without tickets can enjoy free-entry spaces throughout the site, including the Tomorrow’s Warriors live stage at The Brick Lane Tap Room, the Signature Brew stage at The Big Chill, and DJ stages at 93 Feet East and Cafe 1001.

With his current established trio, Cohen will present on tour music from his latest celebrated album ‘Brightlight’ (October 2024) performing brand new original compositions, alongside fan favourites and repertoire from his vast musical library.

Cohen, who has always distinguished himself in the past as a great promoter and discoverer of new, young gifted musicians, here Cohen brings exceptional talent to the fore with his trio configuration, Guy Moskovich on piano and drummer Roni Kaspi.

Guy has been extensively touring as the pianist of choice for Avishai over the past few years and is for the first time a key partner and his presence shines on ‘Brightlight’.

Sensational young drummer Roni Kaspi, born in Israel in July 2000, met Avishai Cohen during covid lockdown, sending to Avishai a performance virtually on Facebook. This distant interaction immediately developed into a strong musical connection, which led to her being invited to join Avishai on tour and recordings have followed The story continues at the highest level with ‘Brightlight’.

Expect high emotions and wonderful interactions between the trio and fans.

Anat Cohen will be marking her 50th birthday next spring with a special set of four concerts in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room, an indoor amphitheater overlooking the New York City skyline. “Anat Cohen: Journeys — A 50th Birthday Celebration,” taking place March 14-15, 2025, will present the clarinetist-saxophonist performing in solo, duo, small-group and large-ensemble settings, including with her Tentet and alongside her brothers, trumpeter Avishai Cohen and saxophonist Yuval Cohen, both celebrated artists in their own right. The programs will showcase Anat’s broad mastery of music, from swing and post-bop to Brazilian and other world styles.

One of the UK’s most exciting guitarists, Remi Harris is joined by double bassist Tom Moore and rhythm guitarist Chris Nesbitt to present an enthralling evening of Gypsy Jazz and Blues. Combining musical virtuosity with passion and flair, this dynamic trio deliver a mesmerising show inspired by Django Reinhardt, Peter Green, Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix and Joe Pass.

The trio features Remi on a variety of acoustic and electric guitars playing an eclectic mix of original compositions, jazz standards and new arrangements of his favourite tunes. He has toured worldwide as well as performing at Buckingham Palace, Montreal Jazz Festival, BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall with Jamie Cullum, on BBC 4 Television and live on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3.​
