Black Mountain Jazz is delighted to invite three of our favourite musicians to present Three Elms, an excellent first album composed by talented young pianist Ross Hicks.  If you would like to come earlier, we will also have vinyls playing in the bar from 7.15pm.

The album Three Elms is a vibrant and dynamic body of work penned by young Cardiff-based jazz pianist and Black Mountain Jazz regular Ross Hicks. This first album reflects a blend of jazz influences with his unique compositional style.

As a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Ross has built a reputation in the Welsh jazz scene as a talented and creative force, gaining recognition for his innovative approach to the piano. His music has been praised for its depth, as noted by jazz critic Ian Mann, who described one of the album’s compositions as “intelligent and intriguing.”

Ross is now part of a trio that includes two other accomplished musicians:

Alex Goodyear, a versatile drummer and bandleader, also a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, has made a name for himself in the UK jazz scene, collaborating with top names like John Law, Simon Spillett, and Alan Barnes, among others. Alex is known for his dynamic drumming and compositional talents, adding a driving rhythm to Hicks’ ensemble.

Nick Kacal, a bassist with a broad and diverse background, originally hailing from Trinidad. He has roots in London and Manchester but now resides in South Wales.
Nick has been active in the jazz and acoustic folk scenes, having studied with Tony Hougham and performed across Europe and even Japan with his own group, Guerillasound. His experience brings a deep, resonant tone to the trio’s music.

This trio brings a high level of musicianship and creativity to the Three Elms album, each member contributing their individual flair while maintaining a cohesive group dynamic.

With Ross Hicks’ ability to craft intricate and emotionally compelling compositions, supported by Alex Goodyear’s expert rhythms and Nick Kacal’s nuanced bass lines, Three Elms promises to be an exciting exploration of modern jazz.
