TANGO PALACE
A Visual Covers Album

Sarah Gillespie is an Anglo-American singer songwriter renowned for mixing elements of blues, folk & jazz with her distinctive streetwise lyricism. Her 4 critically acclaimed albums were met with 4 & 5 star reviews from the Guardian, MOJO, the Independent, the Telegraph, the Financial Times & the Arts Desk plus plaudits from iconic musician Robert Wyatt. Her book of poetry & lyrics was published by Oxford’s Albion Beatnik Press. She has performed live on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, Loose Ends & been interviewed by Andrew Marr on the role of politics in the arts on Start the Week. She has toured extensively for the last 10 years.

Alongside her career as a musician, Sarah Gillespie has exhibited in the USA & UK, & received commissions from private buyers & fans. Her new collection, Tango Palace, described as a ‘visual covers album’, is a series of works inspired by specific pieces of music ranging from Tom Waits & Miles Davis to her fellow band mate: ECM composer Kit Downes. All works are mixed medium and based on the classic 12x12in vinyl album cover dimensions. They are mounted in black recycled wooden frames.

‘As a songwriter, I usually find it more comfortable to compose songs than cover them. But I still have that impulse to interpret other artist’s music. Sometimes I do it musically,  but more often I’m compelled to paint while listening to the songs and music that I love. It helps me to cope with the sensation of not being able to contain my enthusiasm. It is a sort of cathartic homage’.

Gillespie was due to exhibit the new collection at Chelsea’s iconic 606 Club from May 14th. The pieces are now for sale online with 20% donated to the 606 Club. http://www.sarahgillespie.com/paintings

“606 Club is very close to my heart. I used to work in the office many years ago before my first record came out & Steve Rubie gave me some of my first gigs. I hope that revenue from the sale of these paintings might contribute towards keeping the club afloat after the devastating impact of Covid 19.”’
