Wednesday, March 20, 2019
Edition Records have sent their latest newsletter including details of four new releases plus a schedule of Edition artists performing live in the UK and Europe during the remainder of March 2019.
We have received the following press release;
This summer, we’re celebrating the piano and pianists that make them sing!
NNOUNCEMENT // ‘Piano Celebration’
This summer we’re celebrating the piano and pianists that make them sing. Over the next few months we’re releasing 4 albums led or co-led by 4 (two British and two Nordic) very different pianists - Elliot Galvin, Eyolf Dale, Alexi Tuomarila and Liam Noble.
Today, we are are focussing on ‘Departure’, the new album from long standing Norwegian duo of pianist Eyolf Dale and reedsman André Roligheten due for release on 10th May 2019. An album of deep expression, poise and honest collaboration, Departure describes a meeting between two old friends; an intimate dialogue between two critically acclaimed jazz musicians with impressive careers of their own; but also a departure: an album that carves a new path for the duo formerly known as Albatrosh.

THE PIANO EDITION PLAYLIST // Ivo Neame & the Piano
In celebration of the Piano, we asked pianist Ivo Neame to share some of the tracks and pianists that have shaped and influenced his own approach to the piano. The Piano Edition playlist can be heard on iTunes and Spotify now.

“I’ve tried to avoid piano trios as much as possible! 😊. The only piano trios featured on this list are with Ahmad Jamal, Duke Ellington and Lennie Tristano! Pianists often sound best as sidemen anyway - so much of the role of the instrument is the comping and interaction in the ensemble as well as the more exposed moments. The interesting one for me is Keith Jarrett playing with Kenny Wheeler. This session is notorious for the bad energy that Jarrett brought into the studio. Apparently, he refused point blank to play a lot of Kenny’s tunes because he thought they sucked - on this tune Smatter you can hear him start his solo before Kenny has even finished! Check it out at 2:42 - that sounds like a false start to Jarrett’s solo to me”. IVO NEAME
A BIG WELCOME // AuB - Tom Barford & Alex Hitchcock
AuB (pronounced ORB), led by Tom Barford and Alex Hitchcock, two highly talented and exciting tenor saxophonists, signs to Edition for the release of its debut album, due early 2020.
AuB is the London based quartet, masterminded by two young saxophonists, Tom Barford and Alex Hitchcock, musicians who are making huge waves as part of the next generation of virtuosic instrumentalists intent on doing things their way. AuB refers to the meeting of two musical minds: instrumental sounds melded into one group resonance.

DANIEL HERSKEDAL ‘VOYAGE’
Daniel Herskedal released his new album Voyage a few weeks ago and has been getting incredible reviews:
“It feels like the spotlight is on the tuba as a jazz instrument at the moment and Danial is one of the leading exponents of this, playing it with stunning virtuosity…that was amazing stuff…his ability to play fast and with rhythmical intensity in the lowest of the tuba’s registers is a joy to listen to.” Jumoké Fashola BBC RADIO 3
“Voyage continues a scintillating travelogue that follows from Slow Eastbound Train (Edition, 2015) and The Roc (Edition, 2017), while expanding his scope even further in beautifully imaginative ways. Herskedal doesn’t write songs as much as he composes miniature film scores that are graceful and understatedly majestic.” 4 ½ STAR review All About Jazz
“Daniel Herskedal places the sound concept of this fabulous ensemble at the service of hope: permanently open borders, cosmopolitanism and hospitality. Who, in Herskedal’s musical conception thinks “We can do it!”, is not wrong.” NDR Info
“Daniel Herskedal continues to break new ground with his third album.” Lira Magazine, SE
