Guildford Jazz - March 2025

Thursday 6th March: Hexagonal ‘The Music of Bheki Mseleku and Mccoy Tyner’
This sextet was formed in late 2016, to perform the music of two titans of jazz - American McCoy Tyner and South African pianist and saxophonist Bheki Mseleku. The band came from the experience of working and touring with both Bheki and McCoy, which brings authenticity to the group’s music. Hexagonal has released a critically acclaimed debut album and has played to enthusiastic audiences at club and festival appearances including Love Supreme, Scarborough, and Herts festivals.
With John Donaldson – piano, Greg Heath – tenor sax/flute, Rob Leake - alto/baritone sax, Sid Gauld – trumpet, Simon Thorpe – bass, Joe Edwards – drums.
From 19:15 to 22:30 at Guildford Pavilion, Woodbridge Road, GU1 4RP.
Tickets £20 (Discounts for Members and Students) https://www.guildfordjazz.org.uk/

Wednesday 19th March: Benn Clatworthy
From storming post-Coltrane energy to beautiful ballad playing, Los Angeles-based Benn
Clatworthy has matured into a truly great tenor player. He was a huge hit with our Guildford Jazz audience on his last visit in 2013. His tone is extraordinarily beautiful, and his melodic ideas come from the heart. As someone said recently “It’s as though he’s talking to us and telling us a story through the saxophone!’ We are delighted to welcome him back with a top-class rhythm section featuring the fantastic Alex Hutton on piano, Matt Home on drums and Marianne Windham on bass.
From 19:15 to 22:30 at Guildford Pavilion, Woodbridge Road, GU1 4RP.
Tickets £20 (Discounts for Members and Students) https://www.guildfordjazz.org.uk/

Thursday 25th March: Huw Warren “Choro, Choro, Choro”
Celebrating Choro, the vibrant beating heart of Brazilian music, “Choro, Choro, Choro” explores music from the 1880s to the present day by composers such as Ernesto Nazareth, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Pixinguinha, and modern masters such as Guinga and Hermeto Pascoal.
Huw Warren has created several projects around the music of Brazil, including collaborations with Jovino Santos Neto, a critically acclaimed recording of Hermeto’s music
in 2009 and a trio record for CAM Jazz ‘Everything in Between’ in 2019.
With Huw Warren – piano, Tori Freestone – saxophone/flute, Andrew Bain – drums and Yuri Goloubev – drums.
From 7.30 at Performing Arts Studio (PATS), University of Surrey, Guildford, Surrey, GU2 7XH.
