Upcoming Highlights

Hi all,

Hope you all had a happy Easter and enjoyed the long weekend. Just wanted to update you on our latest news.

Tomorrow night (3rd April), we will be hosting the single launch for the immensely talented Kirsty McGee, whose new single ‘Sandman’ appears in the new film thriller by Danny Boyle, Trance, starring James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel, which is out in cinemas now.
Emerging from the underground jazz/folk/americana scene, KIRSTY McGEE has drawn avid fans from around the world with her rich, dark chanson style, influenced by a deep love for the bygone eras of beat jazz, hobo-culture and the crackle of old vinyl. With ten years of touring and six albums to date, her catalogue deftly illustrates the craft of an artist with a powerful resonance but delicate delivery. Hers are a stunning voice and an open heart, which have a style that frames the brittleness of her lyrics perfectly.
?The words drip with meaning. This breathlessly fragile and intimate collection of songs almost drowns in McGee’s absolute need to sing.? ****Q, ?One to watch.? Uncut, “A fascinating talent” Clash, “One of the most beautiful yet gutsy voices on the English folk scene” Bearded, ?Absolutely superb.? Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2, ?A quiet triumph.? fRoots

A world of music at Green Note…
Other upcoming highlights include some internationally-inspired, wonderful shows - not to be missed!
This Friday (5th April), we look forward to welcoming back the one and only MOSCOW DRUG CLUB - a curious musical place where certain elements of 1930’s Berlin Cabaret, Hot Club de France, Nuevo Tango & Gypsy Campfire meet, have a few to drink and stagger arm in arm into the darkness of some eastern European cobbled street on a mission to find the bar where Django Reinhardt & Tom Waits are having an after hours jam with the local Tziganes! Combining their original material with songs by the likes of Jaques Brel, Leornard Cohen, Tom Waits & Bertolt Brecht, Moscow Drug Club provide an intoxicating & intimate musical experience…

Next Wednesday (10th April), we will be hosting a very special evening of Czech music entitled MILOKRAJ featuring singer MARTA TOPFEROVA & bassist TOMAS LISKA. These two cosmopolitan and visionary musicians, have both had illustrious careers involving a broad spectrum of music. “Milokraj” (meaning “beloved land” in Czech), was born out of a deep yearning to explore the music of their roots. Within a short time, Topferova and Li?ka’s dynamic collaboration gave birth to stunning original songs, drawing from Czech and Moravian folklore, as well as other Slavic influences. In addition to Marta’s spirited vocals and Tomas’ acoustic bass, the ensemble features an all-star line up: Moldavian hammered dulcimer player Marcel Comendant, Slovak violinist Stano Pal?ch, and Czech guitarist David Dorů?ka. Topferova and Li?ka’s idea is to capture the spirit and depth of their tradition, yet to bring a fresh approach to the arrangements and interpretation, letting each musicians’ creativity inform the sound. Since Topferova and Li?ka are both compelling members of today’s international music scene, Milokraj promises to be a valuable contribution not only to contemporary Czech music, but to music lovers all over the world.

Another treat in store is the return of the lovely CLAUDIA AURORA a powerful, spine-tingling performer, who sings the haunting melodies of Portuguese fado like nobody else. Her debut album, “Sil?ncio”, is the first collection of original fado songs to be recorded in the UK since the great Portuguese Fado diva Am?lia Rodrigues recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1952.
“Haunting Portuguese fado from this rising star of the scene here performing heartbreakingly poignant material from her widely acclaimed 2011 album ‘Sil?ncio’” (Time Out)
“I love this album by Claudia Aurora. Exquisitely simple and uniquely traditional - unadorned music at its best. Sil?ncio is mood music personified, embracing the classical fado themes of loss and yearning. Her deeply expressive voice is a joy to listen to.” (Liz MacIntosh, Festival Previews)
“Porto-born singer/songwriter Claudia Aurora enraptures with the spine-tingling emotion of her powerful, mournful Fado torch songs. Her extraordinary voice, drenched in a sadness that courses through the audience, gives the soaring sound of Portugal unique dramatic expression.” (St. George’s Bristol)

And for fans of klezmer, we look forward to welcoming STEWART CURTIS & HIS BRASS BOTTOMED KLEZMER QUARTET to Green Note for the first time- these guys have come highly to us!

Songwriter’s Circle…
Another show we’re getting super excited about is our next Songwriter’s Circle show, which is taking place on Tuesday 16th April at the Old Queen’s Head in Angel. Some of you may have been at our first event of this kind which took place last November (featuring Clive Gregson, Rod Picott and Kimmie Rhodes) and can vouch for the fact this was a very special and unique evening. The format of these events is an ‘in the round’ format, where all three artists are on stage at the same time, and take turns in performing songs, and talking about the inspiration behind them. This second event in our series will feature three outstanding US singer-songwriters - acclaimed country-folk artists NELS ANDREWS, celebrated Wisconsin singer-songwriter PETER MULVEY, mesmerising and soulful singer and multi-instrumentalist ALLISON RUSSELL (of Po’ Girl & Birds of Chicago). All three of these artists are well worth checking out in their own right, so we’re pretty excited to have them all together on one bill!

Check out our website for more info on everything we have coming up.

Hope to see you soon!

Immy & Risa xx
