Nick Tomalin and Simon Whiteside launch new Jazz Podcast.

Wednesday, April 22, 2020

Jazz pianists Nick Tomalin & Simon Whiteside have launched a new Podcast series called 2-5-1, Two pianists, Five Podcasts, One subject. The latest programme discusses "Sonny Clark as Sideman".

Nick Tomalin writes;

Along with fellow pianist Simon Whiteside I have launched a new jazz podcast series called 2-5-1, Two pianists, Five Podcasts, One subject.

Our first subject is the jazz pianist Sonny Clark who as you probably know recorded extensively for Blue Note in the 1950’s and early 60’s. We talk about his life, as well as examine his work in more detail both as a sideman and leader. We will also speak a bit more about his musical style with the help of some transcriptions we’ve done.

We’ve so far recorded and released two episodes of the podcast the most recent of which you can link to here:

In this episode Nick Tomalin and Simon Whiteside discuss the music Sonny Clark recorded with Buddy de Franco, Grant Green and Dexter Gordon. Even after re-recording the Buddy De Franco section to half it’s length, the original podcast plan to also include Sonny Criss and Hank Mobley meant it ran to 1.5 hours. So we decided to drop those two sections.
If you would like to hear that long version it will be publicly available on our Patreon page later. If enough people register their interest through comments on the podcast outlets we can upload it to all the usual suspects later.
