Brown’s Hotel in London’s Mayfair, launched a new live jazz club in early October 2024. ‘The Drawing Room After Dark’ aims to create a collaborative space where the boundary between artist and audience blurs and dissolves to redefine traditional hotel lounge performances. Their MD, Richard, is so passionate about this music and project and his enthusiasm is infectious. The programme is curated by Liam Dunachie and Mátyás Gayer, and it’s as high-quality as you would expect; it’s always so nice to see new live venues opening up!

Thursday 7 November - Hugh Pascall Quartet
Hugh Pascall is an award-winning trumpet player and composer. He studied on the prestigious Royal Academy of Music jazz degree course, graduating with a 1st class BMus. He was the Academy’s Scott Philbrick Jazz Prize Winner and one of the first Sir Elton John Scholarship holders. In 2023 he received Associate Honours from the Royal Academy of Music in recognition of his significant contribution to UK jazz.

Winner of the 2019 Parliamentary Award ‘Jazz Instrumentalist of the year’, Josephine Davies is at the forefront of the UK contemporary music scene, pushing the boundaries of jazz. She is known for her melodic focus, versatility and unique style which has been described as “consistently inventive” (Jazzwise), and “strong and authoritative” (The JazzMann).

Nat Steele specialises in playing straight ahead, swinging jazz, and was described by UK drumming legend Clark Tracey as “one of the best vibes players this country has ever produced” – high praise indeed.

Thursday 14 November - Brandon Allen with the Alex Bryson Trio
Alexander Bryson is a British pianist who has appeared at internationally prestigious venues including Ronnies, Washington DC’s Blues Alley and the 606, as well as at the Cork, Derry and London jazz festivals. His trio album, on Hard Bop Records, launched at a sold out show at the Pizza.

Tuesday 19 November - Duncan Hemstock Quartet
Australian saxophonist and clarinetist, Duncan Hemstock plays classic numbers from the ‘20s, ‘30s, and when feeling a little dangerous, the ‘40s. He brings his joy for life and music to every performance, always delivering with a smile and a cheeky quip or two. His clarinet playing is majorly influenced by Benny Goodman, but also carries the fiery intent of Edmond Hall, while his saxophone approach is inspired by the great Lester Young. Dancers are sure to be on the floor, whilst those who feel more comfortable in their chairs will no doubt find their feet tapping to the fierce Swing tunes or swaying themselves to a sweet melody.

Multi award-winning Scottish guitarist Jim Mullen is one of the most soulful and subtly virtuosic players the UK has ever produced, carving his own place in jazz-funk history as a founding member of both The Average White Band and the Morrissey-Mullen Band. As a key player and soloist for five decades, Mullen has become an institution in the British Jazz scene. He has literally played with ‘everybody’ from organist Jimmy Smith to vocalist Clare Martin and has recorded many albums in trio and quartet format under his own name.

Saxophonist Fraser has played across the world and is a regular in some of London’s leading clubs. He has brought his own band to Ronnie Scott’s on numerous occasions and is now signed to the esteemed UK jazz label Ubuntu Music, with whom he released his latest album TipTop! in 2023.

Their dedication to the hard-bop sounds of jazz’s golden age has made them a popular attraction at both internationally-renown jazz clubs like Ronnie Scott’s and grass roots venues alike.

Thursday 28 November - Mátyás Gayer Quartet
Award-winning n jazz pianist Mátyás Gayer is one of the leaders of his generation. This young musician is successfully forging his own distinctive style and musical voice out of the greatness of the jazz piano tradition.
The two-time Montreux Jazz Piano Competition finalist founded his first band and won Hungary’s young talent competition, The Golden Ten Award, at the age of 14. Gayer then started his professional music studies under the tutelage of Karoly Binder, head of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music.
