Shrewsbury Jazz Network has announced its programme for April, May and June 2025. Events take place at The Hive Music & Media Centre, Shrewsbury.

Alice Leggett - Birdsong

Alto saxophonist and composer Alice Leggett brings her highly anticipated debut album, Birdsong, to SJN at the Hive as part of a UK tour. Originally from Cardiff and now based in Amsterdam, Alice is a rising star in the European jazz scene. The album features her Amsterdam based quartet Chaerin Im (piano), Tijs Klaassen (bass), & Wouter Kühne (drums) with guest Alex Hitchcock (tenor saxophone) making a special journey from New York. Birdsong showcases Alice’s lyrical compositions blending rich storytelling and vibrant improvisation.

Laura Jurd Quartet

One of the most distinctive voices in jazz and improvised music today, Laura Jurd’s unique approach to the trumpet is celebrated in the work that she creates. Laura’s love of folk traditions can often be heard in her music, alongside a background in classical composition. Tonight she is delighted to be performing some brand new music, that takes the listener on a journey of rites and rituals, propelled by the world-class rhythm section of Tara Cunningham (guitar) and Corrie Dick (drums), alongside the strikingly brilliant, folk violist, Cori Smith.

A consummate guitarist, Will Barnes’s technical brilliance is matched with an innate and versatile musicality. His versatility and virtuosity combine to produce solos with unpredictable excitement, as he draws from his rich palate of influences. This special line-up features former winner of the Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Musician of the Year Dom Franks (reeds) alongside a formidable rhythm section of Paul Jefferies (double bass) and Alex Goodyear (drums). The band will explore music inspired by the great guitarists of jazz including Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell.
