Summer Music Events at the University of Surrey, Guildford.

We have been asked to publicise the summer music programme taking place at the University of Surrey in Guildford, a mix of classical and contemporary music and student and professional performances.

Music takes centre stage this summer
Whether you like your music loud and lively, classical or contemporary, the University of Surrey offers a superb range of concerts and events from May to July.


On Sunday 28 April at 19.30 Live at the Ivy is a chance to see students from Music and Sound Recording in action. Where else can you sit, stand or dance the night away to energetic, non-stop music from bands and DJs, accompanied by a fully stocked bar, for just £3?

Classical music lovers will enjoy the beautiful acoustics of St Saviour’s Church, Woodbridge Road, Guildford on Saturday 4 May at 19.30 when the University of Surrey Symphony Orchestra present Summer Selection. This student-led concert features some inspiring music including Nielsen, Britten, Barber and Sibelius.  Tickets are £10, with concessions available, making this an affordable treat for all ages.


On Wednesday 15 May, at 19.30 after months of careful crafting, rehearsing and collaborating, music composition students see their beautiful, creative and inventive ideas come to fruition. Expect a real mix -with laptops and electronics alongside more traditional ensembles. Overseeing the evening is special guest adjudicator, composer Michael Zev Gordon. Admission is free to this Joyce Dixey Final Annual Student Composition Award in PATS Studio One.


Saturday 18 May at 19.30 sees the David Lovatt Award Final, the culmination of hard work from student composers who have worked with the Ligeti String Quartet fine tuning new pieces.  The Ligeti Quartet will perform the short-listed works and announce a winner.
The Ligeti Quartet champion contemporary music, performing to acclaim both nationally and internationally. Formed in 2010, the Quartet gave its first Park Lane Series performance in the Queen Elizabeth Hall?at the Southbank Centre, London, in January this year.

Admission is free to this event in PATS Studio One.

Notes:

With the exception of the St Saviour’s Church concert, all events take place on the university campus, just off the A3, which is easy to reach by car and public transport and offers free parking after 5pm Mondays to Fridays anal all day at weekends.
