Vortex having a Ball for the World Cup

London's Vortex Jazz Club will be running their famous "musical football matches", The Vortex Jazz Ball, throughout the 2010 World Cup. Official match day programme attached.

Here’s what The Vortex have to say about the upcoming fixtures;

Dear friends,

The Vortex is pleased to announce it will be hosting a series of improvised jazz and live football for the 2010 World Cup.

Kicking off this series of events, England vs USA, on 12th June, will be projected on a big screen in Gillett Square, with music by Chris Biscoe (the Brian Clough of the clarinet), Henry Lowther (a world class dribbler), Sonia Slany and Alcyona Mick (both sensational around the box). Completing the team is Robbie Robson, heavily influenced by Nat King Ashley Cole.

Following that:

Monday 14th June - Pianist Dave Morecroft brings together improvisers to musically narrate Italy vs Paraguay

Wednesday 16th June - South Africa vs Uruguay - with Zhenya Strigalev, Dave O’Brien and Nick Ramm vs Andres Ticino, Guillermo Hill and Paul Taylor

Wednesday 23rd June - England vs Estonia
The teams will be the Lamed Wufniks vs the Baldanders and players confirmed so far incude Chris Dowding (trumpet), James Marsh (sax), Ed Hiller (drums) and Zac Gvirtzman (piano) ? all members of Tactile Bestiary who specialise in structured improvisation informed by jazz, groove playing and Asian music.

Saturday 26th June - First Round of 16
‘The Ping Pong All-stars’ (aka N.E.W )
Steve Noble (drums)
John Edwards (bass) & Alex Ward (guitar)

‘The Safari Strollers’
Orphy Robinson (percussion), Shabaka Hutchings (sax / clarinet)
& Oren Marshall (tuba)

Sunday 27th June - Round of 16 - with teams made up from the following musicians; Chris Batchelor (trumpet), Ashley Slater (trombone), Oren Marshall (tuba), Stuart Hall (guitar /violin), Hans Koller (piano/keys) and Dave Smith (drums).
